I am updating because I waited nearly a year to try it again. This time it is Two Thumbs Up! Very glad to have tried it again. I had the quiche Lorraine, tomato soup, and blueberry crumble pie. All I can say is YAY! The soup was very savory. The quiche was fantastic! And the pie was simply to Die For. My only complaint (and you KNEW I had to throw in a few, right?) are that the quiche and soup could have been hotter, and my dad ordered a chicken salad sandwich but got the salad (in a bowl) form, not in a sandwich form. They corrected it immediately and with apologies, gave him a full one when he wanted a half. So it's all good, we're happy with them and the place was great. Will definitely go back again.

The Grand Traverse Pie Company is one of the awesome features of Michigonia. You can come here if you have a taste for a soup for lunch, or maybe to warm up with a pot pie for dinner. Maybe you will come here just share some close moments with a friend over a slice of desert pie. Sometimes I just came for the coffee and the wifi since it is generally a great place to study. Whatever it is, I find Grand Traverse Pie Company a great place to stop because the service is, for the most part, pretty good, there seem to be plenty of comfortable seats, and the food is delicious. The cost won't break the bank, but there are cheaper options if you are just looking for a cup of coffee or a lunch sando - but you can't get all of it one place the way you can with the Grand Traverse Pie Company. I've come here mostly for the Chicken Pot Pie, the Cinnamon Rolls, Apple Pie and the coffee, but whatever you get, it will be tasty.

This is a solid restaurant. Extremely similar to Panera Bread (no waitresses), but cheaper and higher quality. It's a Michigan thing, so you feel good patronizing this place. The pies I've had from here are solid, nothing like grandma's.. but definitely something to bring to work or family get-togethers. Let's talk about the food: -A sandwich with a side will run you $6-8 -The cheddar chicken and the apple mustard are awesome -Soup $3-5 for a cup or a bowl (they're nearly the same size though, no reason to get a bowl in my opinion) -The potpies are awesome, I really like the steak ones. If you don't like peas and beans though, you might not like these. (They're $6.50 each) So yeah, solid lunch location, good place to study (they have a fireplace) and a good place to stop for a small dinner if you're feeling lazy.

It's pretty good comfort food. The service is not great, and one of the servers' dad was hanging around a little too familiarly. Also, the place could be cleaner. For all the staff standing around, someone should be tidying up the seating area.

All the grills shut down (so no sandwiches) and pie put away 40 minutes before close, really? If you close at 5 close at 5, not 4:30. I'm sure the food is good but clearly the employees only care about getting out early.

This place is great! It is a better version of Panera. It is a PureMichigan that bakes delicious pies. They food is also top-notch. My personal favorite is the chicken pot pie. My girlfriend loves their Mediterranean Quiche. The prices are very reasonable. The only reason I give it 3 stars is because of service. I have ordered full quiches from here a couple of times. One time it was to bring to a pot luck. They told me it would be ready to be picked up in an hour. I arrived in an hour and they said it wasn't ready and that it would be another hour. When I explained that I was going be late, the lady behind the counter asked me, "what do you want me to do?" That seemed rude considering I was told it would be ready in an hour and I had to wait another hour to get it.

After a not great lunch I decided to give breakfast a try (because apparently I'm a glutton for disappointment). I ordered the scramble wrap with sausage, which sounded like a solid choice. In short, it was disgusting -- just dripping in grease from the excessive cheese filing. I couldn't even finish it because it was so bad. I now need to go home and eat dry toast. So bad. I would not return if they paid me.

As a general consumer of food, this place is somewhere between fine and good. The pie is phenomenal. As a study environment, it is quite good- with room for improvement. The staff is good. It is counter service, and I am generally neither under or overwhelmed by the service. The food is fine/ sometimes good. I have had some of their salads, soups, sandwiches, and quiches. None of it is particularly impressive to stand out in my mind, nor is it bad enough to be remarkable. The pie is remarkable. Some of the best pie that I have ever had. Though this location is in East Lansing, there is seemingly no difference in quality of pie between this restaurant and the ones in Traverse City. Every piece of pie is like a lake-side vacation! From a student perspective- Pros: -there are a bunch of tables (lunch hour can get pretty busy though), as well as a whole back room of tables -many outlets -free drink refills -a general sense of tolerance towards study groups and individuals with laptops (I would just avoid busy times out of politeness) Cons: -at times it is BUSY -in the evening there seems to be an influx of meetings (organizations (not so irritating) as well as Girl Scouts (adorable, but irritating). -the pie is always calling to you

I had to force my Grandma in to going there because she wasn't impressed the last time she went, luckily I was driving! All of the options sounded good, everything on the menu seemed to have a special ingredient that made it stand out from other restaurants. I got a Turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce as it seemed fitting for late November. The sandwich was good but as you can see in the picture there really wasn't much turkey, maybe even less than a $5 footlong, criminal! Service was quick and the restaurant is super cozy! They even have a really cool stone fireplace that is double sided and visible from the outside as well! Seems to be great for students and their lap-tops, said students who were taking all the good tables. College town problems. I would choose this over other quick service places if in the area and in need but I will keep my fingers crossed for better proportions in the dishes.

Three and a half stars. The food isn't mind blowing, and it's a little expensive, I think, for what it is. This time I got the beet and feta salad, which came with a nondescript creamy dressing. The salad greens were mostly fresh (there were a few stray ones with browned edges), and I liked the crunchy sweet bits. The ham and Havarti sandwich was warm, and I liked the chewy baguette that it came on. I expected the cherry crumb pie to be better because this is primarily a pie place. However, I think the pie was cooked at too high a temperature because the top of the crumb topping was browned but the inside was kind of gooey (not the good kind). Service is friendly or not depending on who's working the cash register and assembling your food. The fireplace is nice, especially on a cold wintry day. Overall, A-OK for me!

I agree with a past reviewer-- it does feel very Panera-y, however the bonus is certainly the pie. The food tastes less mass produced than other places as well. My only gripe is the service can be very slow, outside of the lunch rush-- which is kind of peculiar. I always tell myself they are off making pies from scratch, so I should be patient. They do have a lovely Chocolate silk pie, that they wont call chocolate silk pie, but that's exactly what it is honey.
(3)Nick M.
The food is good, especially the bagels. But to be honest, it feels and looks just like Panera. It's the same thing essentially, with subtle differences here and there.
(3)Elaine H.
They have so many different pies here and they have wifi! What more could you want? I went here for lunch with my mom. The chicken pot pie was really good. My mom got a Southwest chicken salad, which was also good. I'm definitely coming back here to try the dessert pies!
(4)Nora M.
Obviously the pie is good, and especially the strawberry rhubarb crumb top pie. The food is fairly tasty, order focaccia with your sandwich instead of a different bread-its the best one. For a corporate style restaurant its one of the better ones. I have two caveats-the coffee is really bad and the wi-fi is hit or miss. Its possible the coffee would be better if they used a bit more when making it, even the dark roast is translucent. It reminds me of the weak stuff my grandma liked. A cup of coffee and a piece of pie is one of the better things in life, but you might want to bring your own coffee!

This place is so cute! I ended up here mainly because I got lost. My co-worker and I were on our first visit to Lansing and searching for a place with free wi-fi and decent grub. Alas, this place found us after we went one block too far down Grand River. Once inside, this place looks like Panera with a pie rack. I got a ham, egg,and cheese croissant and gave oogly eyes to all the danishes and desserts it was just too early to eat. I hung out in this place until lunch and I just loved it's whole vibe. If you want to find a bagel/bake shop go past MSU's main strip and stop here. Something about this place makes you want to linger for a while.

Friggin' delicious. I am salivating! The tomato tortellini soup is by far my most favorite soup any where. So creamy and unique! Very tasty. I'm not sure what my favorite sandwich is called, but it's the basically hot ham and cheese with spicy mustard - only it tastes like so much more than just that! For dessert, I recommend the mixed berry pie. It has at least four varieties of the berry family in it and is such a refreshing dessert. I've never had a pie like it. I've bought the pie as a whole twice to two separate events (one work, one family) and it was a major hit. I really can't think of any thing bad about GTPC... a few of my friends think it's a bit pricey, but I think the quality of the food is worth a few extra bucks at lunch time. The service is the only area that I would may be say lacks. It isn't bad, it's just mediocre. This is definitely a missed opportunity if you haven't paid a visit!

Super yummy. I don't eat any carbs so I was weary of coming here because they are known for their pies. Luckily they had a great selection of salads. I ordered the chicken fiesta salad. Super yummy and fresh. Everything that my coworkers ordered looked super yummy and they enjoyed every bite of their meals. They even put out little samples of pie to try.

number of visits ~ 5 last visit 6/2013 This is a good choice in East Lansing for a non-sit-down (no waitor/waitress) restaurant They have very good soups and sandwiches for which the prices are very reasonable. For restaurant-made pie, their pies are fantastic. I especially love their crumble crusts. It's probably the best non-homemade crust I have ever had. Any variety of the pies that I have had have been very tasty. They also have coffee and free wifi, so it would be a good place to sit and chat and/or read with a piece of pie or some coffee.

The chicken focaccia sandwich is unreal. My dad had the manitou sandwich and licked the plate clean. Solid follow up with the raspberry apple pie.

I stopped in for the first time this afternoon not knowing what to expect. Such as waiters, vibe price etc. I often eat out by myself during the day , so atmosphere is a big deal. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was a walk up order counter style, the call you out by name when your order is up. Lots of salad, Sammy , pot pie and soup options. For some spazzy reason I chose the PB & J and milk. and a dt. mt.dew( which no pone ever has so SCORE!) I also got a Lakeshore Crumb pie, This I didn't like but I didn't know what it was so I will be back Maybe even tomorrow! Highly recommend!

If you are looking for some great pie, take a stroll by the Grand Traverse Pie Company! It's kind of like your typical Panera Bread... 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 soup deals, salads, breakfast, etc. However, they throw a few things into the mix like their chicken or prime rib pot pies, spinach mushroom quiches, and of course, PIE! If you order to meal, you can get a slice of pie at a discounted price. Also, for every pie slice you order, they give you a punch card that ultimately gets you a free slice after 12 slices! I had the Parisian Ham and Havarti Sandwich, and two slices of pie. The sandwich is layered with a generous amount of smoked ham, havarti cheese, crispy romaine lettuce, spicy mustard, and a special cherry sauce, all between an herb baguette. I thought the cherry sauce would have been overwhelming but I took the cashier's advice that it wasn't as strong cherry flavor. To my surprise, the cherry sauce actually perfected the combination of the smoked ham flavor with the spicy mustard. It was just the right touch of sweetness to the sandwich. They gave me 3 options for a side: potato chips, apple slices, or cherry coleslaw. I was warned against the cherry coleslaw so I listened obediently and went for the baked potato chips instead. My friend ordered the chicken quesadillas. These were pretty good and I will affirm that the portions were more than decent. Served with a side of salsa, the grilled chicken, tomatoes, and cheese are all wrapped in a tomato tortilla. I love quesadillas and these were pretty good, but not the best I've had. As for dessert, my friend ordered a slice of the Banana Creme Pie and I ordered a slice of the Lakeshore Berry Pie and the Mountain Berry Crumb Pie. The Banana Creme Pie was delicious. Banana creme, banana slices, and whipped creme all in a pie crust... Completely yummie for those who love bananas. It had a mild flavor, which I prefer when it comes to bananas for dessert. The banana creme was just the right consistency, smooth, thick and not watery. Now for my pie slices. The Lakeshore Berry Pie had a mix of strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, and apple within soft layers of baked pie. Can you say bliss? All I needed was a glass of milk to have a 'Ratatouille' moment with my pie. (For those who don't know what I'm talking about, watch the movie!) The Mountain Berry Crumb Pie is made up of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries. This pie was different from the Lakeshore Pie in that it was a crumb pie. In essence, they have layered the top portion of pie with crumbs of what seemed to be oatmeal, pie bits, and some sort of cinnamon-honey combo. So you might be wondering: Sasha, what's up with all the berries? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BERRIES! They are high in anti-oxidants too! I'm hoping they really are the natural fountain-of-youth food. I give the Grand Traverse Pie Company 3-stars as a whole because sadly, I remain a fan of Panera Bread. I still have yet to try other menu items at Grand Traverse so it has potential to change my mind. On the other hand, the pies I've had are extremely amazing thus far and they deserve 4-stars!! Woohoo!

Have had lunch there a couple of times. For the price ($9 for soup/sandwich combo, no drink) I think it is a poor value. I had the tomato bisque soup (okay, but had some grease floating on top that I had to spoon off) and grilled cheese, which was quite awful. The grilled cheese isn't grilled at all, just toasted bread. I was really disappointed with that. This being the case, I have to say their pies are fabulous, so stick with those. I've also had the quiche, which seemed to have a lot of onions and was just okay. Stay with the pies - get the heart of lunch or dinner somewhere else.

One of my favorite places to eat when I don't want to go to a restaurant. Their apple pie and pot pie is absolutely phenomenal. They also catered pie for my wedding- the service and organization was excellent. I highly recommend!
(5)Nate L.
I have to say that the pie here is OK. It may not be mind blowing, nor does it taste quite like homemade but it is acceptable. The crust is flaky and a decent base for the pie, but their filling needs a little work. Now, I know blackberries are not in season right now, but it did taste like canned pie filling. I think it was the powerful blast of sweetness that is reminiscent of such. I think they could do better. The pie wasn't as much the issue as was the coffee. It was, hands down, the most bitter cup I've ever had. I thought Starbuck's was no. 1 in that category, but this managed to take its spot. Maybe I just got a bad draw? I don't know, but really wanted some good coffee to go with my pie. Other than that, the restaurant had the same feel as a Panera or a restaurant of similar ilk. With the knowledge of Chapelure in my data bank, I think I'll just pick my desserts up there next time.

I like this place because it is pretty and they gave me a free brownie on my B-Day. The staff sometimes seem like they have attitudes...could just be me though...another pro:free WI-FI. Another con: the air conditioner is always on blast! I had a cherry walnut salad there that was great, and the cherry coffee was different, but good....worth trying, imo....
(3)Alexandra K.
I live across the street from Grand Traverse and while I'm not a "pie person," I must say they have some delicious general fare -- namely their tuna sandwich. Prices and fare is comparable to Panera, but it's much quieter here. The one thing I would say is to avoid the focaccia, it's too thick. I prefer Panera but given my proximity Grand Traverse, it wins.
(4)Teresa K.
Good muffins great vibe. Feels like panera but much less crowded in the am. Lunch salad pretty good. Too much sauce on my sandwich. Chocolate peanut butter pie is amazing.
(4)Kalvin R.
Best apple pie I have ever had hands down. Great location clean nice people working this is a 10.
(5)Max K.
Compare to a Caribou or Panera. Walk in, look at the menu behind the counter, make your order, and wait. I ordered a Chicken Salad Sandwich, priced around $5, that came with the option of chips or a fruit coleslaw. The sandwich was pretty good, but my choice of the fruit coleslaw over the chips didn't quite do it for me. It had a weird pickle-like taste and was a mix between ambrosia salad and coleslaw. Overall, Grand Traverse Pie company is a good place to catch up on some homework or studying while, you guessed it, eating a slice of pie. The natural apple pie was a little on the dry side, didn't taste homemade, but was definitely step up from a grocery store pie.
(3)Erich Z.
If you're gonna call yourself a "Pie Company," I'd think the least you could do is make a decent pie. GTPC makes a very dry crust that tastes like it came out of a grocery store freezer, and if you don't start with a decent crust why put any filling in it? Much better pies can be had elsewhere, so why bother eating here?
(2)Corey M.
Not just pie, as Panera isn't just a bakery. I love their Cherry Chicken Salad. Pie is good as well.
(4)Amy P.
Great pie and pretty good food. It is also a great place to study if you sit in the backroom where it is less noisy. However, I would not recommend coming here to study around lunch hour. It can get very busy and they will shuffle you around. If you go on a game day, they give you a free slice of pie but you have to ask.
(4)Matt R.
This place is pretty good. The pies are awesome. Nothing more needs to be said. The rest of the menu is pretty much a knock off of Panera's food choices. Many sandwich options, soups, etc. Very good. The only knock that I have is that the portions are SMALL. I had a lunch combo with about a quarter of a sandwich & a few spoonfuls of soup. Not filling, but it did taste great. I guess you just can't get it all sometimes....
(4)Cassandra N.
Worst meal I've had in a long time. The grilled sandwiches are incredibly greasy, the soup too salty, the pie undercooked and way too sweet. The sandwich was so bad I actually threw 3/4 of it away. The coffee was good though. Don't waste your money when there are a dozen better places within a mile radius.
(1)Tiffany S.
hooray for their strawberry rhubarb crumb pie and the lakeshore berry! that's all i've tried here. hooray!
